A kart that runs well cold, then splutters or dies under sustained load often has a delivery problem upstream of the carburettor. Work from the tank to the carburettor and prove each stage.

Recognise the pattern

  • Dies after several minutes and restarts after standing: investigate tank venting, heat and restricted flow.
  • Fails on long straights or full throttle: check pump delivery, pulse line, filter and hose restriction.
  • Fails over bumps or corners: inspect loose connections, pickup position, fuel level and trapped lines.
  • Only one hot kart is affected: compare hose routing and exhaust proximity with a reliable kart.

Start at the tank

Use fresh, clean fuel and inspect the pickup, shut-off valve, filter and tank cap or separate breather. A blocked vent can create vacuum as fuel leaves the tank. Do not drill or permanently modify a cap; confirm the correct breather component and test it safely using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Inspect every hose

Look for cracks, softening, pinching, kinks, loose clips and routing near heat. Check the pulse hose separately from the fuel inlet and outlet. Mark the pump ports before removing anything.

Understand the pulse pump

Walbro explains that a pulse pump moves a diaphragm using engine pressure changes. On a four-stroke application, the pulse source is normally the intake manifold rather than an oil-filled crankcase. A leaking, restricted or incorrectly connected pulse line can therefore reduce fuel flow even when the pump looks sound.

Repair or replace

If delivery is low, confirm the tank vent, hose, filter and pulse signal before condemning the pump. Controlled confirmation

After repair, inspect for leaks with the kart stationary, then test under controlled load. Keep fuel away from hot exhausts and ignition sources, and do not run an unsafe improvised supply on track.
