A kart that pulls, scrubs one tyre or has an off-centre steering wheel does not automatically need its track rods adjusting. First remove play and identify bent or incorrectly fitted parts; only then set the geometry.
Inspect before adjusting
- Set tyre pressures correctly and confirm matching tyre sizes.
- Check wheel and stub-axle bearing play.
- Inspect rod ends, track rods, kingpins, steering column bearings and all fixings.
- Check stub axles, steering arms and chassis pick-up points for impact damage.
- Confirm the steering reaches its designed stops without a track rod or cable becoming the stop.
RiMO instructs operators to inspect the complete steering and tracking after a front impact and to replace deformed or damaged steering parts. Adjusting around a bent component hides the fault rather than fixing it.
Common symptoms
- Pulls to one side: compare pressures, tyre wear, brake drag, axle geometry and toe side-to-side.
- Steering wheel off centre: centre the rack or steering system mechanically before changing individual rod lengths.
- Heavy or notchy steering: isolate binding kingpins, bearings, rod ends, cables or misalignment through the full range.
- Rapid inner or outer-edge tyre wear: measure toe and inspect bent components and bearing play.
- Geometry changes after every session: inspect loose locknuts, damaged threads, rotating eccentric spacers and cracked mounts.
Set tracking with the correct reference
Use the kart manufacturer’s measurement points and a proper alignment tool. Do not copy a toe figure from another kart model. Keep left and right track-rod engagement safe and even, hold rod ends in their neutral operating position and tighten locknuts to the correct specification.
RKP stocks M8 nylon track rods in 260 and 270 mm, M10 nylon track rods in 240 and 270 mm, and 8 mm aluminium track-rod assemblies. Thread size, left/right thread, centre length and end type must match.
Final test
With the kart isolated, turn through the full steering range and check for free movement, correct stops and cable clearance. Then perform a controlled low-speed test and recheck every locknut and fixing.
Source
Never heat or casually straighten a bent steering knuckle, stub axle or track rod. Replace safety-critical damaged components.
