Quick answer: Identify a kart chain from three things: the chain marking, the pitch measured between pin centres and the matching sprocket profile. Then record the required length in pitches or links. A 428 chain, 219 chain and their joining links are different systems and must not be mixed.
Safety: Isolate the engine and prevent the rear axle from moving before inspecting the drive. Replace damaged guards before the kart returns to service.
Start with the markings
Clean a short section and inspect the side plates and joining link for a stamped chain reference. Check the engine or gearbox sprocket as well as the rear sprocket. A previous repair may have introduced a mismatched part, so one marking is evidence rather than the whole answer.
Measure chain pitch correctly
Pitch is the distance from the centre of one pin to the centre of the next. Measuring across several pitches and dividing by the number of pitch spaces reduces error. Use an unworn, straight section and record the result in millimetres and inches. Also measure the internal width between the inner plates and the roller diameter.
If the measurement sits between two expected values, do not round it until the sprocket and chain reference have been checked.
Count the length
For a continuous replacement chain, count the pitches or links on the old chain and record whether it uses a split link or rivet link. When cutting from a bulk roll, lay the new and old chain side by side under light tension. Do not use a badly elongated chain as the only length reference; confirm adjustment range on the kart.
Check the sprockets at the same time
- Hooked, pointed or uneven teeth
- Side wear suggesting misalignment
- Loose carrier, damaged key or excessive run-out
- Incorrect engine and rear sprocket alignment
- Stiff links, corrosion, missing seals or abnormal noise
Chain manufacturers emphasise that chain condition, sprocket condition, lubrication and alignment affect one another. Fitting a new chain onto badly worn sprockets can shorten the life of the replacement.
